Minneapolis, MN – The Islamic Association of North America (IANA) proudly concluded its 21st annual conference on September 1, 2024, in Minneapolis. This impactful event attracted hundreds of Muslims from across North America and focused on addressing pressing issues within the community, including education, mental health, and family unity.
Under the theme “Clarity in Times of Confusion,” the conference aimed to provide guidance and direction for Muslims navigating complex challenges in the U.S. Lectures were delivered in both Somali and English, covering a wide range of topics such as the upcoming U.S. elections, the importance of religious education, and the realities of the Day of Judgment.
In his opening remarks, Sh. Mohamed Mursal, Chairman of the Shura Council stated, “Let us make this convention a meaningful and transformative experience. May we leave here with renewed faith, strengthened bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, and a deeper understanding of our religion.” This sentiment resonated with attendees, who expressed gratitude for the opportunity to connect and learn from one another.
The conference also celebrated a graduation ceremony for students who completed their studies at various Islamic centers in Minnesota. Graduates received certificates in Qur’an completion and Islamic studies, underscoring the association’s dedication to education and spiritual growth.
When asked about the choice of theme, Sheikh Yussuf Abdulle, the executive director of IANA, explained, “There is a lot of confusion in many aspects of the community, such as family breakdown, child neglect, and education. We also face confusion during election seasons and other pressing issues that require clarity.”

Attendees expressed their enthusiasm for the conference, praising the organization, the diverse range of topics discussed, and the opportunity to connect with fellow Muslims. “I found the programs enlightening and beneficial,” said Fadumo Hassan, a 25-year-old attendee.
Mahad Farah, a Somali immigrant who attended the conference with his three children, voiced his gratitude for the support provided by the Somali community. “I am deeply grateful to IANA for their unwavering support to Somali families and youth, as well as the spiritual guidance for our community,” he remarked.
Prominent scholars such as Sh. Okasha Kameny, Sh. Mufti Muner, Sh. Abdirahman Sh. Omar, and Sh. Abdirizak Hashi were featured speakers at the conference.
Describing the event as a resounding success, Sh. Yussuf Abdulle noted, “The conference was well-attended, featured engaging topics, and fostered meaningful discussions among participants.”
