Minnesota Swears in First Black Chief Justice in Historic Ceremony

Minnesota witnessed a historic moment as Natalie Hudson became the first person of colour and the first Black woman to serve as the chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. The swearing-in ceremony, attended by state, federal, and tribal judiciary members, took place at the Minnesota History Center, marking a significant milestone.

Breaking Barriers in the Judiciary

In a historic celebration attended by around 350 people, Natalie Hudson took the oath of office, emphasizing the message that people of colour, especially Black individuals, can aspire to any ambition. Hudson, who previously served as a state Supreme Court associate justice, assumed the role of chief justice following the retirement of Lorie Gildea.

Inspiration for Future Leaders

Vanne Owens Hayes, a longtime friend of Hudson, highlighted the responsibility that comes with being a ‘first.’ She expressed that Hudson’s appointment as the first Black chief justice would inspire other minorities to pursue similar milestones, emphasizing the importance of visibility and creating opportunities for others.

Ceremonial Occasion

While both Justice Hudson and Associate Justice Karl Procaccini were privately sworn in weeks ago, the official ceremony took place to celebrate their appointments. The event showcased not only Hudson’s groundbreaking achievement but also marked the swearing-in of Procaccini, who is the first Muslim to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Diversity in the Judiciary

Procaccini, appointed by Governor Tim Walz, served as Walz’s former general counsel. His appointment brings diversity in experiences among the justices. He played a crucial role in drafting executive orders during the COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder. Procaccini expressed his commitment to upholding the court’s history of progress, independence, and integrity.
