A Historic Milestone for the Minneapolis Police Department and the Somali American Community

Today, the Minneapolis Police Department celebrated a significant milestone as Ikran Mohamed was sworn in as the first Somali American woman police officer to join the Minneapolis police force. The ceremony took place at the Minneapolis Indian American Center, where a crowd of supporters gathered to commemorate this historic occasion.

Attendees included Minneapolis Police Chief, the mayor, city council members, family members, community leaders, and fellow law enforcement officials. The diverse presence underscored the importance of this moment, not only for Mohamed but also for the broader community and the other officers sworn in that day.

Ikran Mohamed joins the ranks of other Somali women officers currently serving in the Metro Transit Police Department and the Saint Paul Police Department. In 2014, Khadra Mohamed made history as the first Somali American woman to join the St. Paul Police Department, paving the way for future officers by advocating for the option to wear a police-issued hijab. These trailblazers not only break barriers but also inspire young women and aspiring officers within the Somali American community and beyond. Ikran’s achievement represents a significant step forward in diversifying law enforcement and fostering stronger community relations.
