Minneapolis, MN – August 31, 2025 – The Islamic Association of North America (IANA) proudly celebrated its 22nd Annual Convention at the Minneapolis Convention Center, drawing over 5,000 attendees, predominantly youth, for a day rich in meaningful discussions and activities centered on faith and community.

IANA, a non-profit organization uniting 37 Islamic centers across the U.S., with 17 based in Minnesota, is committed to evolving as a grassroots entity that enhances collaboration with key stakeholders while representing the universal values of Islam through quality community services. Said Sheikh Abdirizak Hashi, IANA board chair.
The convention kicked off at 10:00 a.m. and continued until 11:00 p.m., featuring a diverse program that included lectures and panel discussions in both English and Somali. Notable panels included “Creed, Clarity & The Call to Learn,” which brought together esteemed scholars to discuss the importance of education and understanding in Islam. Another session, “Lions & Lanterns,” explored the path of prophetic leadership, inspiring participants to embody values of compassion and integrity.

The afternoon sessions addressed pressing issues, including bridging generational gaps within families and tackling the challenges of identity and integrity faced by Muslim youth in today’s culture. Lectures on financial literacy provided practical guidance, while discussions on community service highlighted the significance of social responsibility.

The event also celebrated the graduation of students from IANA centers, honoring their dedication to learning and personal growth.

Joining the conference virtually, prominent Somali scholar Sheikh Mohamed Abdi Umal encouraged youth to remain steadfast in their faith and contribute positively to their communities. He urged the attendees to continually seek knowledge. IANA Executive Director Yusuf Abdulle remarked, “This convention is a testament to our community’s strength and resilience. Together, we are building a brighter future for our youth and ensuring the preservation of our faith.”

Sheikh Abdirizak Hashi, board chair of IANA, emphasized the significance of such events, stating, “The 22nd Annual Convention is not just a gathering; it’s a celebration of our collective strength.
