Federal Agents Go Door-to-Door in Minnesota as Somali Childcare Fraud Investigation Intensifies

MINNEAPOLIS — A widening federal investigation into alleged fraud involving publicly funded childcare and healthcare programs has brought renewed scrutiny to Minnesota’s Somali American community, with federal authorities conducting door-to-door inquiries as the Trump administration intensifies its campaign against suspected welfare fraud.

The investigation follows years of federal scrutiny of alleged fraud involving government-funded programs in Minnesota. One of the largest cases, the Feeding Our Future scandal, resulted in dozens of criminal charges and convictions after prosecutors alleged that roughly $250 million intended for child nutrition programs was stolen. In November 2025, federal prosecutors announced the 78th defendant charged in that case.

But the latest investigation has expanded beyond the Feeding Our Future case.

Federal authorities have increasingly focused on childcare providers accused of potentially submitting fraudulent claims for government assistance. The National Review reported that investigators were going door-to-door in Minnesota’s Somali immigrant community as part of the expanding probe.

The heightened federal presence has generated both support and concern.

Supporters of the crackdown argue that taxpayer-funded programs must be protected from abuse and that aggressive investigations are necessary when authorities have evidence of fraudulent billing. The Trump administration has also established a new Department of Justice division dedicated to combating fraud involving federal programs, federally funded benefits, businesses and nonprofits.

Civil-rights advocates and Somali community leaders, however, have warned against treating an entire ethnic community as synonymous with criminal activity. They argue that individual investigations should remain focused on specific evidence and suspects rather than broad assumptions about Somali Americans.

That distinction has become increasingly important as scrutiny of Somali-owned childcare centers has intensified following a viral video alleging widespread fraud. Minnesota officials subsequently investigated facilities featured in the video, while some providers disputed the allegations and said they were being unfairly targeted.

Federal authorities have nevertheless continued their investigations.

In April 2026, the Justice Department confirmed that federal, state and local law enforcement executed 22 court-authorized search warrants in Minnesota as part of an ongoing fraud investigation. Officials said the operation was primarily focused on Medicaid providers, including childcare and daycare providers, and was separate from immigration enforcement.

The investigations come amid a broader political battle over Minnesota’s handling of government-funded social programs. Republicans have accused state officials of failing to detect fraud quickly enough, while Democrats and community advocates have warned that the response risks turning legitimate concerns about government oversight into a campaign against Minnesota’s Somali population.

For Somali Americans living in Minnesota, the expanding investigations have created an increasingly complicated environment — one in which legitimate efforts to uncover fraud are occurring alongside fears of stereotyping, harassment and collective blame.

The federal government says its objective is straightforward: identify people who stole public money and hold them accountable.

The larger question now is whether authorities can pursue that mission aggressively while ensuring that innocent childcare operators, families and an entire immigrant community are not treated as suspects simply because of their background.

As federal investigators continue gathering evidence, the ultimate test will be whether individual allegations translate into prosecutable cases — and whether the government’s response remains anchored in evidence rather than ethnicity.
